Early Life and Background

Jim Jones was born James Warren Jones on May 13, 1931, in Crete, Indiana. He grew up in Indiana, showed early interest in religion and social justice, and later moved to California, where he founded the Peoples Temple in the 1950s.

Leadership of the Peoples Temple

Jones built a multiracial congregation focused on racial equality, communal living, and social activism. The Peoples Temple established locations in Indiana and California, attracting followers with promises of safety, equality, and community support.

Final Events and Legacy

In November 1978, Jones and more than 900 followers died in a mass tragedy at the Jonestown compound in Guyana, following the murder of U.S. Representative Leo Ryan. The event is widely studied as a case study in cult dynamics and group psychology. For more background, see the Britannica entry on Jim Jones.
