Early Life and Union Leadership

James Riddle Hoffa was born in 1913 in Indiana and became a labor organizer in Detroit. He rose through the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, becoming president in 1957. Under his leadership, the union grew into one of the largest and most powerful labor organizations in the United States.

Hoffa faced multiple investigations into union finances and ties to organized crime. In 1964, he was convicted of jury tampering and mail fraud. He was sentenced to prison and later pardoned by President Richard Nixon in 1971, which led to his release and a brief return to union politics.

Disappearance and Unsolved Mystery

Hoffa disappeared in July 1975 after meeting with associates in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. Despite extensive investigations by the FBI and numerous witness accounts, his body was never found. The case remains officially unsolved and continues to attract public interest.
