What Happened During the Assassination Attempt

On March 30, 1981, John Hinckley Jr shot President Ronald Reagan and three others outside the Washington Hilton Hotel. Hinckley fired six shots in rapid succession, striking Reagan in the chest, press secretary James Brady, a Secret Service agent, and a police officer.

Why Hinckley Attempted the Attack

Hinckley was motivated by an obsession with actress Jodie Foster. He hoped the attack would impress her. Court records and psychiatric evaluations described delusional thinking and a fixation on violent acts portrayed in the film Taxi Driver.

Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 1982 and was confined to a psychiatric hospital. He was later released with strict conditions under court supervision. The incident led to major changes in federal laws, including the Insanity Defense Reform Act and stricter rules for presidential protection.
