Early Life and College Career

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Jr. in 1947, became a dominant force at Power Memorial Academy and later at UCLA. Under coach John Wooden, he led the Bruins to three NCAA championships and earned national player of the year honors before entering the NBA draft.

NBA Career Highlights

Drafted first overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1969, Abdul-Jabbar won MVP honors in 1971 and led the Bucks to a championship. After moving to the Los Angeles Lakers, he won five additional titles, earned a second MVP, and became the league’s all-time leading scorer, a record he held for decades. His signature skyhook shot was nearly impossible to block, and his longevity made him a model of durability.

Legacy and Post-NBA Influence

Abdul-Jabbar retired in 1989 as the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and a 19-time All-Star. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in basketball history. Off the court, he has authored books, advocated for social justice, and worked as a coach and commentator. His impact is documented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the NBA’s official records.
