Who Was Kiliaen van Rensselaer?

Kiliaen van Rensselaer was a Dutch merchant and diamond trader from Amsterdam who became a director of the Dutch West India Company. He is best known as one of the first patroons in New Netherland, the Dutch colony in North America.

Rensselaerswyck and Land Holdings

In 1630, van Rensselaer received a large land grant along the Hudson River in what is now New York State. The patroonship, called Rensselaerswyck, gave him feudal rights over the land and settlers. He organized the colony to develop farms and trade under Dutch colonial rule.

Legacy and Historical Context

Van Rensselaer's patroonship survived early conflicts and later English takeover of the region. His family retained significant land and influence for generations. The van Rensselaer lineage played a notable role in the political and economic history of the Hudson Valley, as recorded by historical sources such as the New York State Archives.
