Historical Kings of Bulgaria

Bulgaria was a kingdom from 1908 until 1946. The most prominent rulers were Ferdinand I, who declared full independence from the Ottoman Empire, and his son Boris III, who led the country through World War I and the interwar period. The monarchy was abolished in 1946 after a referendum, and the country became a People's Republic.

Role of the Bulgarian Crown

Under the Tarnovo Constitution, the Bulgarian king served as head of state with limited powers, sharing authority with a parliament and cabinet. The crown represented national unity and continuity, especially during periods of political instability. Today, the institution has no constitutional role in the Republic of Bulgaria.

Modern Context and Legacy

The former royal family, including Simeon II, who briefly served as prime minister, remains active in Bulgarian public life. The legacy of the kingdom is visible in national symbols, architecture, and historical memory.
