Who Was the King of Holland?

Louis Bonaparte was King of Holland from 1806 to 1810. He was the younger brother of Napoleon Bonaparte and ruled the Kingdom of Holland, a state created by Napoleon to control the Netherlands.

Reign and Policies

During his reign, Louis attempted to govern as a Dutch monarch rather than a French proxy. He adopted the Dutch language, learned the language, and tried to respect local customs. However, Napoleon forced him to follow French policies and integrate the Dutch economy into the continental system.

Abdication and Legacy

Louis abdicated in 1810 after Napoleon lost patience with his independent stance. The kingdom was annexed directly into France. Louis later lived in exile and is remembered as a monarch who tried to balance French demands with Dutch interests.
