What Is a Land Plane?

A land plane, also called a land leveler or box scraper, is a heavy implement pulled behind a tractor or ATV. It uses angled blades to shave and redistribute soil, gravel, or sand across a surface. Unlike a bulldozer, it smooths rather than pushes large piles of material.

How Does a Land Plane Work?

The operator adjusts the depth of the blades to remove high spots and fill low spots. As the machine moves forward, the blades break up clumps and spread material evenly. The result is a flatter, more uniform surface ready for grading or compacting.

Common Uses for Land Planes

Land planes are widely used in agriculture, construction, and property maintenance. They help level building pads, prepare driveways, and improve drainage on fields. For detailed guidance on selecting and operating one, see the overview at USDA Forest Service.
