What Is the Largest Diamond?

The largest diamond ever found is the Cullinan Diamond, discovered in South Africa in 1905. It weighed 3,106 carats in its rough form, making it the biggest gem-quality diamond recorded.

Where Is the Cullinan Diamond Now?

After its discovery, the rough stone was cut into several polished gems. The largest piece, called Cullinan I or the Great Star of Africa, is set in the British Sovereign's Sceptre. It is held in the Royal Collection at the Tower of London.

How Was the Largest Diamond Discovered?

Miners found the Cullinan Diamond at the Premier Mine in Cullinan, Transvaal, South Africa. It was identified by Joseph Asscher and Company, who carefully cleaved and polished the stone into major gems and smaller stones.
