Lauryn Hill Tribute to Roberta Flack
Lauryn Hill has publicly cited Roberta Flack as a major vocal and artistic influence. Hill often references Flack’s phrasing, tone, and interpretive style in interviews and live performances. The tribute highlights Flack’s impact on neo-soul and modern R&B.
Key Covers and Performances
Hill has performed Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and other classic ballads in concert settings. Her interpretations focus on stripped-down arrangements and intimate vocal delivery. These performances showcase a direct lineage between Flack’s 1970s sound and Hill’s 1990s work.
Musical Influence and Legacy
Flack’s smooth, minimalist production and storytelling shaped the texture of Hill’s solo album and The Fugees. Critics note shared emphasis on clear lyrics, slow tempo, and emotional restraint. Hill’s tribute underscores Flack’s role in defining sophisticated pop and soul balladry.
