How the Spanish Line of Succession Works

The line of succession in Spain determines who inherits the throne if the reigning monarch abdicates, dies, or becomes unable to rule. Spain uses a system based on primogeniture, meaning the firstborn child typically inherits, regardless of gender. This change was introduced to promote equality between male and female heirs.

Current Heirs in the Spanish Line of Succession

Currently, the line of succession is led by Princess Leonor, the elder daughter of King Felipe VI. She is the heir presumptive and holds the title of Princess of Asturias. If she ascends the throne, she would become the next queen regnant of Spain. After Princess Leonor, the line moves to her younger sister, Infanta Sofía.

The Spanish Constitution and the Spanish Royal Family Law regulate succession, including requirements of legitimacy, religion, and age. The Cortes Generales, Spain’s parliament, formally oversees the line of succession. For more details, see the official Spanish Royal Family website.
