What Is the Pommel Horse in Men's Gymnastics

The pommel horse is one of six apparatuses in men's artistic gymnastics. It is a rectangular, leather-covered object supported by two legs. Gymnasts perform continuous circular and scissor movements while gripping the pommels, without pausing at the end.

Key Skills and Routine Requirements

Routines must include circles, travel elements, and scissors. Gymnasts use single and double leg swings, called flairs, and combine them with handstands and dismounts. Deductions apply for pauses, bent arms, and steps on landing.

Scoring and Competition Format

Judges evaluate difficulty, execution, and composition. The final score combines the D-score for content and the E-score for form and control. Major events include the Olympic Games and World Championships, governed by the FIG.
