What Happens When a Person Falls into Lava

Falling into lava exposes the body to temperatures between 700°C and 1,200°C (1,300°F to 2,200°F). At these temperatures, organic tissue is destroyed almost instantly. The extreme heat causes rapid dehydration and combustion of soft tissue, while bones and teeth may partially calcify or fragment.

Why Survival Is Not Possible

Human skin and organs cannot withstand the thermal energy of molten rock. Contact causes immediate, irreversible burns over the entire body. The density difference between the human body and lava means a person typically sinks quickly, increasing exposure. No verified case documents survival after full immersion in lava.

Real Lava Incidents and Safety

In 2022, a man fell into a lava lake at Ethiopia’s Erta Ale volcano and died, according to reports from the Ethiopian Geological Survey. Such incidents are rare but usually fatal. Authorities restrict access to active volcanic craters and lava lakes to prevent falls and exposure to toxic gases.
