Best Viewing Locations and Times
For the clearest view, stand on a wide east-west avenue such as 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, or 57th Street. Arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes before the forecasted sunset or sunrise time, and check local sunset tables for exact minutes. Weather, cloud cover, and street obstructions can affect visibility.
Why It Happens
The alignment happens because Manhattan’s grid is rotated roughly 29 degrees east of true geographic north. This tilt causes the sun to line up with the street canyon during specific dates near the summer solstice. The phenomenon is similar to other solar alignments in cities with organized grids.
