What Is a Masked Wrestler
A masked wrestler is a professional wrestler who performs under a full face mask. The mask hides their identity and often signals a mysterious or heroic persona. This tradition is especially common in lucha libre and other styles of pro wrestling.
Why Wrestlers Wear Masks
Wrestlers wear masks to create a distinct character, protect their privacy, and build storyline intrigue. In many promotions, a mask represents honor, and losing it can end a storyline or career. Some wrestlers use masks to transition between characters or to work multiple shows under different identities.
Notable Masked Wrestlers
Iconic masked wrestlers include El Santo, Blue Demon, and Rey Mysterio. El Santo became a cultural icon in Mexico through film and in-ring success. Rey Mysterio helped popularize high-flying masked wrestling in the United States and worldwide.
