Minke Whale Presence in Barnegat Bay

The minke whale is one of the smaller baleen whales found in the western North Atlantic. While primarily an offshore species, minke whales occasionally enter Barnegat Bay, especially during seasonal movements along the New Jersey coast. Sightings are most common in cooler months when they follow prey closer to shore.

Habitat and Behavior

Minke whales feed on small fish and krill, often using lunge-feeding techniques near the surface. In Barnegat Bay, they may pass through deeper channels and tidal inlets where baitfish concentrate. They are generally solitary or found in small groups, and their surfacing is usually brief and low-profile compared with larger whale species.

Conservation and Viewing Guidelines

Minke whales are protected under U.S. federal law, including the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Observers should maintain a safe distance and avoid approaching, chasing, or encircling the animal. Responsible whale watching helps reduce stress on the animal and supports long-term population health.
