What Is the Most Popular Name?
The most popular name varies by country and time period, but Muhammad consistently ranks among the most common given names worldwide. According to the United Nations and national statistics offices, Muhammad and its spelling variants top lists in many regions.
Why Is Muhammad So Common?
The name Muhammad is widely chosen because of its religious significance in Islam. Large Muslim populations in countries such as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Nigeria contribute to its high frequency. Variants like Ahmed, Mahmoud, and Hamid are often counted together, increasing its overall rank.
How Are Popular Names Measured?
Governments and research organizations track birth registrations and census data to determine name popularity. The United Nations Population Division and national statistics offices compile these records. Because naming customs differ, direct global comparisons require careful aggregation of regional data.
