Snow at the National Zoo

The Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, D.C. is home to giant pandas, including a cub named Snow. The zoo participates in the Giant Panda Species Survival Plan, managed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Habitat and Care

Giant pandas at the zoo live in a climate-controlled habitat with indoor and outdoor areas. Keepers provide a diet of bamboo, specially formulated biscuits, and occasional treats. The habitat includes enrichment items to encourage natural climbing and foraging behavior.

Conservation and Research

The zoo supports panda conservation through research on reproduction, nutrition, and cub development. The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute collaborates with Chinese partners on panda studies. Learn more about the zoo's giant panda program at https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/giant-pandas
