Who Won NFL Comeback Player of the Year
The NFL Comeback Player of the Year award is given annually to a player who overcomes significant adversity, such as injury or poor performance, to have a standout season. The award is selected by the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA). Recent winners include players from both the AFC and NFC who delivered career-best seasons after missing substantial time or bouncing back from injury.
Recent Winners and Notable Seasons
In recent years, the award has gone to players such as Joe Burrow and Geno Smith, both of whom led their teams to strong results after returning from serious injuries. Burrow won after leading the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl following a knee injury that caused him to miss significant time. Smith earned the honor after a late-career resurgence with the Seattle Seahawks, posting career-high passing numbers. Past winners also include Dak Prescott, who returned from a severe ankle injury and a calf issue to put up elite passing and rushing numbers.
Criteria and Selection Process
To be considered, a player must demonstrate a clear improvement after a period of diminished performance or extended absence due to injury. Voters evaluate statistical production, leadership, and the overall impact on the team's success. The PFWA members cast their votes during the regular season, and the winner is announced near the end of the year. For a full list of past recipients and detailed voting information, visit the official PFWA page at Pro Football Writers of America.
