Northern White Rhino Population Overview

The northern white rhino is one of the two subspecies of white rhino. By 2021, the population had declined to just two known living individuals, both female. The subspecies is considered functionally extinct in the wild due to decades of poaching and habitat loss.

Current Status and Living Individuals

As of 2021, the last two northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu, lived under constant protection at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Both are unable to reproduce naturally. Scientists and conservationists have shifted focus to advanced reproductive technologies, including in vitro fertilization and stem cell research, to prevent the subspecies from disappearing entirely.

Conservation Efforts and Future Outlook

International organizations and governments are supporting efforts to save the northern white rhino through genetic banking and assisted reproduction. Researchers are working with southern white rhino surrogates to develop viable embryos. These initiatives aim to restore a sustainable population, though success remains uncertain and dependent on long-term funding and scientific progress.
