What Is Zika on Oahu

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus primarily spread by Aedes species mosquitoes. On Oahu, local transmission has been reported in past years, with cases linked to infected travelers and local mosquito populations. The Hawaii Department of Health monitors Zika activity and issues updates when cases are confirmed.

Symptoms and Health Risks

Many people infected with Zika have mild or no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. Zika infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects, including microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects. The virus has also been linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome in rare cases.

Prevention and Travel Guidance

Prevention focuses on avoiding mosquito bites and reducing breeding sites. Use EPA-registered insect repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and stay in air-conditioned or screened-in rooms. Remove standing water around homes and hotels to limit mosquito breeding. Travelers returning from Zika-affected areas should take steps to avoid mosquito bites for several weeks to prevent spreading the virus to local mosquitoes.
