What Is the Oarfish in Mexico

The oarfish is a large, pelagic ray-finned fish found in tropical and temperate oceans, including Mexican waters. It belongs to the family Regalecidae and is known for its long, ribbon-like body and red dorsal crest.

Oarfish Species and Size

The most commonly referenced species is the giant oarfish, Regalecus glesne, which can reach lengths of over 11 meters. It is one of the longest bony fish in the world and is occasionally observed near the surface or washed ashore along the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Oarfish Sightings and Habitat

Oarfish are rarely seen because they inhabit deep offshore waters, typically between 200 and 1,000 meters. In Mexico, they are most often reported in the eastern Pacific, from Baja California to the southern coast. Strandings or nearshore sightings sometimes generate public interest and are documented by marine researchers and coastal monitoring networks.
