What Is the Orange Faced Monkey

The orange faced monkey, also known as the orange-faced langur or orange-bellied leaf monkey, refers to several primate species with distinctive reddish or orange facial markings. These Old World monkeys belong to the family Cercopithecidae and are closely related to other langurs and macaques. They are arboreal, primarily folivorous, and live in forested regions of South and Southeast Asia.

Habitat, Diet, and Behavior

Orange faced monkeys inhabit tropical and subtropical forests, including lowland rainforests and montane evergreen forests. Their diet consists mainly of leaves, fruits, and flowers, with occasional insects. They live in social groups led by a dominant male, and females typically give birth to a single infant after a gestation period of around six months. Their coloration helps them blend into dappled forest light.

Conservation Status and Threats

Many species referred to as orange faced monkeys face habitat loss from logging, agriculture, and infrastructure development. Some populations are also threatened by hunting for bushmeat or the illegal pet trade. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists several related langur species as vulnerable or endangered, and ongoing conservation efforts focus on habitat protection and community-based management.
