How the Best Picture Category Works
The Academy Awards Best Picture category highlights the year’s most outstanding films. For the 2026 ceremony, eligible films must have a qualifying theatrical run in Los Angeles County and meet Academy documentary and runtime rules. The final nominees are chosen by voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Eligibility and Timeline for 2026
To qualify for the 2026 Oscars, a film generally must be publicly exhibited for at least seven consecutive days in a qualifying theater. The Academy usually announces the official eligibility calendar and rules in the spring, with nominations voting starting in early 2026. Exact dates are confirmed on the Academy’s official site.
How the Final Nominees Are Selected
After the submission deadline, Academy members receive ballots and rank their choices using a preferential voting system. The top contenders reach the five-film Best Picture shortlist, and further rounds narrow the list to the final nominees. Detailed procedures are explained by the Academy on its official website.
