Do Otters Attack Humans?

Otters rarely attack humans, but incidents do occur, especially with large species such as sea otters and giant otters. Most encounters end without injury, yet bites and scratches can happen when otters feel threatened, cornered, or surprised. The International Union for Conservation of Nature notes that otters are wild animals capable of inflicting serious wounds when provoked.

Why Do Otters Become Aggressive?

Common triggers include protecting young, defending food, or reacting to sudden movements. Mothers with pups may charge if they perceive a threat. Otters can also become bold in areas where people feed them, leading to closer contact and higher bite risk. Provocation, such as trying to touch or feed an otter, increases the chance of an aggressive response.

How to Prevent and Respond to Otter Attacks

Keep a safe distance, avoid approaching pups, and never feed wild otters. If an otter approaches, back away slowly without turning your back. In the rare case of a bite, clean the wound thoroughly, apply antiseptic, and seek medical attention promptly. The World Health Organization advises immediate care for any wild animal bite to reduce infection risk.
