What Happened to the Bodies from Pan Am 103

Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988, killing all 259 people on board and 11 on the ground. Recovery teams collected remains from the crash site and surrounding area. Investigators and forensic specialists worked to identify victims from personal effects, dental records, and DNA.

How Victims Were Identified and Returned

Authorities used forensic dentistry, fingerprints, and later DNA analysis to identify remains. Some bodies were returned to families for burial, while others were buried in a communal grave at Tundergarth Churchyard in Scotland. The process involved coordination between Scottish police, airline officials, and consular services.

Where Victims Were Buried or Memorialized

Most victims were repatriated to their home countries for funeral services. Families could choose private burial or cremation. In the United States, many victims are commemorated at memorials, including the Pan Am Flight 103 Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Additional memorials exist in Lockerbie and at Syracuse University, which lost 35 students in the attack.
