What Happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School
On February 14, 2018, a former student opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The attack killed 17 people and injured many others. Law enforcement and first responders arrived quickly, but the event exposed gaps in school safety and mental health protocols.
Financial and Economic Impact
The Parkland shooting generated significant costs for victims, families, and the community. Expenses included medical treatment, counseling, funeral costs, and long-term trauma care. The school district faced lawsuits and settlement payments, while local businesses and property values were affected by national media attention. Insurance claims and government funding requests increased in the aftermath.
Legal and Policy Changes
In response, Florida passed legislation raising the minimum age for gun purchases, expanding background checks, and creating a school safety commission. Survivors became leading voices in the March for Our Lives movement, pushing for stricter gun laws nationwide. Ongoing court cases continue to address civil liability and institutional responsibility.
Ongoing Recovery and Community Support
Recovery efforts in Parkland have focused on mental health services, memorials, and infrastructure upgrades. Organizations and nonprofits have directed donations toward victims’ families and trauma support programs. Public records and updates are maintained through official city and school district channels, with additional information available from the Broward County government website.
