Reported Incidents Involving Dogs at PetSmart
PetSmart, one of the largest pet retail chains in the United States, has faced public attention over dog deaths that occurred during grooming, boarding, or training services. Investigations and news reports have documented cases where dogs died or suffered serious injuries while in the care of PetSmart associates or third-party contractors. These incidents have raised questions about safety protocols across the company’s grooming salons and boarding facilities.
Common Causes and Safety Concerns
Reports indicate that some dog deaths were linked to heatstroke, stress, respiratory issues, or complications from anesthesia during grooming or medical procedures. In several cases, regulators cited inadequate supervision, improper restraint, or failure to follow established animal care guidelines. PetSmart has stated that it reviews each incident, updates training, and collaborates with veterinary professionals to improve safety standards.
What Pet Owners Should Know
Pet owners considering PetSmart services are encouraged to review grooming and boarding policies, ask about staff training and certification, and monitor their pets for signs of stress or illness after visits. Documenting a pet’s medical history and sharing clear instructions with associates can help reduce risk.
