What Are Pharmacy Technology Programs

Pharmacy technology programs train students to support pharmacists in dispensing medications and managing pharmacy operations. They cover pharmacology, pharmacy law, dosage calculations, medication safety, inventory management, and use of pharmacy software. Most programs prepare graduates to work as pharmacy technicians in retail, hospital, and long-term care settings.

Curriculum and Training Format

Programs typically include classroom instruction and hands-on practice in a simulated or actual pharmacy environment. Common topics include pharmaceutical terminology, prescription processing, compounding basics, sterile and non-sterile preparation, billing and reimbursement, and health information systems. Many programs also include an externship or clinical experience. Some are offered as certificates, diplomas, or associate degrees and can be completed in several months to two years.

Career Outcomes and Accreditation

Graduates can pursue roles as pharmacy technicians in hospitals, retail chains, mail-order pharmacies, and specialty pharmacies. Certification exams, such as the PTCE, are often required or preferred by employers. When choosing a program, look for accreditation from bodies such as the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists or equivalent regional agencies.
