What Was Found

In 2015, a wing component confirmed as part of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 washed ashore on Réunion Island. Later, other debris, including a flaperon and internal panels, was identified on coastlines and seabeds across the Indian Ocean. The discovery provided physical evidence that the aircraft crashed into the ocean, ending years of uncertainty about the fate of the plane.

Search and Recovery Efforts

After the disappearance in March 2014, an extensive multinational search focused on the southern Indian Ocean. Authorities used satellite data, underwater acoustic signals, and autonomous submersibles to scan the seafloor. In 2018, a private company conducted a new seabed search, but the main wreckage has not been located. The search area covered more than 120,000 square kilometers of ocean floor.

What Investigators Learned

Officials concluded that the plane flew on autopilot until it ran out of fuel, based on satellite communications and flight path analysis. Debris studies showed no signs of pre-impact fire or explosion. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau and Malaysian authorities published detailed reports outlining these findings.
