What Is Powassan Tick Disease?

Powassan virus is a rare tick-borne illness that can cause severe neurologic disease. It is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks and groundhog ticks. The virus can lead to inflammation of the brain and surrounding tissues.

Symptoms and Health Risks

Symptoms often appear within one week to one month after a tick bite and may include fever, headache, vomiting, and confusion. In severe cases, Powassan can cause seizures, memory loss, and long-term neurological problems. Some infections can be fatal.

Prevention and When to Seek Care

Prevention focuses on avoiding tick bites by using repellent, wearing protective clothing, and checking the body after outdoor activities. If you develop symptoms after a tick bite or time spent in wooded or grassy areas, seek medical care promptly.
