What Is Slapped Cheek Syndrome

Slapped cheek syndrome, also called fifth disease, is a mild viral illness caused by parvovirus B19. It often starts with cold-like symptoms and a bright red rash on both cheeks. In adults, joint pain is common, but the illness is usually short-lived. The condition spreads through respiratory droplets and is most contagious before the rash appears.

Why It Matters During Pregnancy

Parvovirus B19 can occasionally affect the fetus, especially in the first or second trimester. In rare cases, it may cause fetal anemia or, very rarely, miscarriage or stillbirth. The risk is highest in early pregnancy, but most exposed pregnancies do not lead to serious problems. Regular monitoring helps identify any issues early.

Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Medical Advice

Common symptoms include a slapped-cheek rash, low fever, headache, and joint soreness. Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms and confirmed with a blood test for antibodies or viral DNA. If you are pregnant and suspect exposure or symptoms, contact your midwife or obstetrician promptly. They may arrange extra ultrasound scans or refer you to a fetal medicine specialist. For more information on parvovirus B19 and pregnancy, see the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists guidance at RCOG patient information.
