What Is the Presidential Line of Succession

The presidential line of succession defines the order in which officials assume the presidency if the office becomes vacant. The line is established by the U.S. Constitution and clarified by federal law, ensuring continuity of government during transitions, resignations, or incapacitations.

Succession Order in 2017

In 2017, the line began with the Vice President, followed by the Speaker of the House, President pro tempore of the Senate, and then Cabinet secretaries in the order their departments were created. This structure remained consistent with the Presidential Succession Act of 1947.

How the Process Works

If the presidency becomes vacant, the vice president immediately assumes the role. After that, the next eligible official in the line steps in, subject to constitutional eligibility requirements. The process is governed by law and is not subject to personal choice or political negotiation.
