Who Are Putin's Daughters?
Vladimir Putin has two daughters, Maria Vorontsova and Katerina Tikhonova, from his first marriage to Lyudmila Shkrebneva. The sisters have largely avoided the spotlight, but Western governments and media have identified them as key figures in Russian elite networks. Their education and business interests have drawn particular attention from analysts studying Kremlin-linked finances.
Education and Early Careers
Maria Vorontsova studied medicine at Saint Petersburg State University and later specialized in endocrinology. Katerina Tikhonova graduated from Moscow State University with a degree in physics and later pursued a master's in applied mathematics. Both sisters have been linked to technology and research initiatives, including projects connected to artificial intelligence and data analytics.
Sanctions and Financial Exposure
Following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the United States, European Union, and United Kingdom imposed sanctions on Putin's inner circle, including his daughters. These measures froze assets and restricted access to Western financial systems. Reports indicate that the sisters previously held property and business interests in Russia and Europe, though detailed ownership records remain limited.
Public Profile and Media Coverage
Despite sanctions, the daughters maintain a low public profile, with rare appearances at state events or in official media. Analysts note that their visibility has increased in Russian state television and digital platforms in recent years.
