What Is a Real ID

A Real ID is a state-issued driver license or identification card that meets federal security standards set by the Department of Homeland Security. It is required for domestic air travel and entry into certain federal facilities starting May 7, 2025.

Documents You Can Use Instead

If you do not have a Real ID, you can use a valid U.S. passport, passport card, or DHS trusted traveler card. A compliant state ID, enhanced driver license, or military ID also works for domestic flights. Visit the Transportation Security Administration website for the full list of acceptable IDs.

How to Get a Real ID

To apply, visit your state motor vehicle agency in person with proof of identity, residency, and your Social Security number. You will also need to provide your full legal name and date of birth. Fees and processing times vary by state.

Key Travel Tips

Check your document expiration date before traveling. If your license or ID is not Real ID compliant and you do not have an alternative, you will not be allowed through TSA security checkpoints for domestic flights. Keep copies of your documents in case of delays or issues.
