What Is a Real ID
A Real ID is a state-issued driver license or identification card that meets federal security standards set by the REAL ID Act. It is required for official purposes such as boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal buildings.
Why You Need a Real ID
You need a Real ID to pass Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints at airports within the United States. Without it, you cannot use a standard driver license as your sole identity document for domestic air travel. It also allows access to military bases and some federal facilities.
How to Get a Real ID
Visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles office with proof of identity, residency, and your Social Security number. Fees and processing times vary by state. You can find the full list of required documents at https://www.dhs.gov/real-id.
