What Is Reflux Pain

Reflux pain is discomfort caused by stomach acid moving back into the esophagus. It often feels like burning in the chest or throat, especially after eating or when lying down. This sensation is commonly called heartburn.

Common Causes of Reflux Pain

Reflux pain can happen when the lower esophageal sphincter weakens or relaxes too much. Triggers include large meals, fatty or spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and obesity. Certain medications and lying down soon after eating can also increase symptoms.

When to Seek Medical Help

Occasional reflux pain is usually not dangerous. You should see a doctor if symptoms happen often, interfere with daily life, or come with trouble swallowing, weight loss, or vomiting. Persistent reflux may need testing or treatment to prevent complications.

For more information on symptoms and management, visit the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases page on GERD and heartburn.
