What Is a Royal Swan?

A royal swan refers to the mute swan (Cygnus olor) that is officially owned by the British Crown, primarily on certain rivers and waterways in England. Historically, the Crown claimed ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water, a right still observed today during the annual Swan Upping census.

Under UK law, royal swans are protected wildlife, and it is an offense to harm, capture, or kill them without permission. The Crown’s ownership is managed by the Queen’s Swan Warden, usually appointed through the Vintners’ and Dyers’ livery companies, who oversee monitoring and conservation efforts along the Thames.

Conservation and Current Numbers

Modern conservation programs have helped stabilize mute swan populations, including those considered royal swans. Organizations such as the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust provide guidance on swan welfare and habitat protection, supporting the long-term health of these birds in the UK.
