Basic Rules in Athletics

Athletics events follow standardized rules set by World Athletics to ensure fairness and consistency. Athletes must start from designated positions, obey lane assignments on the track, and avoid false starts. In sprints, leaving the blocks early results in immediate disqualification.

Rules for Jumps and Throws

In jumps, athletes must take off and land within marked zones, and fouls occur when they step beyond the line. Throws require competitors to stay within the circle or cage and exit from the rear half. Implementations of these rules are detailed by World Athletics.

General Conduct and Timing

Officials monitor races, jumps, and throws for compliance with equipment and conduct standards. Timing systems, photo finishes, and measurements are used to determine results. Athletes who interfere with others or violate equipment rules may be disqualified.
