What Is a Runner Collapse?

A runner collapse is a sudden loss of consciousness or the inability to continue running, usually during or immediately after a race. It is a medical event that requires prompt attention. Common causes include heat illness, dehydration, low blood sugar, cardiac issues, and exertional heat stroke.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

Most collapses are linked to exertional heat illness when the body cannot cool itself fast enough. Other factors include inadequate hydration, electrolyte imbalance, and pushing beyond training limits. Runners with undiagnosed heart conditions face higher risks. Sudden stops after intense effort can also trigger fainting due to blood pooling in the legs.

Prevention and Immediate Response

Prevention starts with proper pacing, hydration, and acclimatization to heat. Event organizers can reduce risk by providing shade, cooling stations, and medical staff along the course. If a runner collapses, move them to a cool area, elevate their legs, and call emergency services immediately. Rapid cooling and monitoring are critical.
