Russian Polar Bears Overview

Russian polar bears are a subpopulation of the species Ursus maritimus found primarily along the Arctic coast of Siberia and the Russian Arctic archipelagos. They depend on sea ice for hunting seals, traveling, and breeding.

Habitat and Range

Russian polar bears inhabit the Chukchi Sea, Laptev Sea, and Kara Sea regions, including areas such as Wrangel Island and Franz Josef Land. These areas provide crucial denning sites and access to seal prey during the hunting season.

Diet and Behavior

Russian polar bears mainly hunt ringed and bearded seals from sea ice. During ice-free periods, they may fast or scavenge on carcasses. They are solitary animals, with mothers caring for cubs in dens during the winter months.

Conservation Status

Russian polar bears face threats from climate change, which reduces sea ice, and from industrial development in the Arctic. The species is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, and hunting is regulated under international agreements.
