Overview of the Female Prison System
Russian women's prisons are part of the Federal Penitentiary Service system. They house female inmates convicted of crimes ranging from theft to murder. Facilities are divided into general, strict, and special regimes based on sentence length and behavior.
Conditions and Daily Life
Inmates typically live in shared barracks with limited privacy. Daily routines include work assignments, meals, and limited recreation. Access to healthcare, education, and legal aid varies by institution and region.
Population and Legal Framework
The number of women in Russian prisons has changed over the past decade due to sentencing trends and amnesties. Conditions are monitored by domestic and international bodies. For current data and official reports, see the Federal Penitentiary Service website FSIN official site.
