What Is Santiaguito Volcano

Santiaguito is a complex of lava domes inside the Santa María volcano crater in Guatemala. It formed after a major 1902 eruption and remains one of the most active volcanic centers in Central America.

Eruption Activity and Hazards

Santiaguito erupts frequently, producing lava flows, pyroclastic flows, ash plumes, and lahars. Activity is monitored by the Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología. The volcano can disrupt air traffic and affect nearby communities.

Monitoring and Regional Impact

Authorities track seismic signals, deformation, and gas emissions to issue early warnings. Eruptions influence local agriculture, infrastructure, and tourism, while international agencies support hazard mapping and risk reduction efforts in the region. For current updates, see the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program.
