Sesame Street Black Characters Overview
Sesame Street has featured several Black Muppets and human characters since its debut in 1969. Characters such as Gordon, Susan, Miles Robinson, and others have been central to the show's mission of modeling diversity and inclusion for young viewers.
Representation and Educational Impact
The inclusion of Black characters on Sesame Street aimed to reflect the realities of many American children. The show used these characters to teach literacy, numeracy, and social skills while promoting empathy and understanding across racial lines.
