Is Prometheus Required Viewing Before Alien Covenant
Prometheus is not required to understand Alien Covenant. Alien Covenant is a direct sequel to the original 1979 Alien film and a prequel to the first Alien movie. Prometheus is a separate prequel that explores the Engineers and the origins of the Xenomorphs, but it does not set up the main plot of Alien Covenant.
What Prometheus Adds to the Alien Story
Prometheus introduces the android David, the Engineers, and early connections to the Xenomorph lifecycle. Watching it gives context for David’s role and the broader mythology behind the Alien franchise. However, Alien Covenant reuses these elements without requiring deep prior knowledge.
Recommended Viewing Order for the Alien Series
If you want the full chronological experience, watch Alien, then Aliens, followed by Prometheus and Alien Covenant. If you only care about the core Alien story, you can skip Prometheus and start directly with Alien Covenant.
