Why Do Dogs' Feet Smell Bad?

Dogs' paws can develop a strong, often corn chip-like or cheesy odor. This is usually caused by bacteria or yeast living in the warm, moist spaces between toes. Sweat and debris build up, creating an environment where odor-producing microbes thrive. Some breeds with dense hair between pads are more prone to this issue.

Common Causes and Warning Signs

Frequent licking, redness, swelling, or chewing at paws can signal a problem. Common triggers include allergies, yeast overgrowth, bacterial infections, or trapped moisture from walks. In rare cases, a foreign object or skin injury becomes infected. If the smell is sudden, strong, or accompanied by discharge, a vet visit is recommended.

How to Reduce and Prevent Foot Odor

Regular paw cleaning helps. After walks, gently wipe paws with a damp cloth or pet-safe wipe, and dry thoroughly, especially between toes. Keep hair between pads trimmed to improve airflow. Use breathable dog boots in wet conditions, and wash bedding often. For persistent odor, ask a veterinarian about medicated shampoos or treatments.
