Why Snakes Climb Power Lines

Snakes may climb power poles and transmission towers to hunt prey, seek warmth, or move between habitats. Their smooth scales and climbing ability allow them to grip rough surfaces, and they sometimes use lines as pathways across open terrain. Utility structures can resemble natural perches, especially in rural or suburban areas.

Risks to Grids, Wildlife, and People

When a snake contacts multiple conductors or a conductor and grounded equipment, it can create a short circuit or flashover, potentially causing outages or equipment damage. Large snakes are more likely to bridge gaps on high-voltage lines. Wildlife can be injured or killed, and downed lines or damaged equipment may pose safety risks to nearby people and property.

How Utilities Manage Snake Encounters

Utilities inspect lines after outages and may install wildlife guards, insulated covers, or perch deterrents on transformers and poles. Maintenance crews remove debris and vegetation that can help animals reach lines. In regions with frequent snake activity, operators may adjust patrol schedules and use infrared cameras to detect heat signatures on equipment after storms or high-heat days.
