What Was the Stanford Scandal

The Stanford scandal refers to the fraud orchestrated by Allen Stanford through Stanford International Bank. The scheme promised abnormally high returns on certificates of deposit and attracted billions in deposits worldwide.

How the Fraud Worked

Stanford International Bank claimed to invest in highly secure, short-term instruments in real estate and other assets. Investigators later determined that the bank operated as a Ponzi scheme, using new deposits to pay returns to earlier investors while misappropriating funds.

In 2012, Allen Stanford was convicted on multiple counts of fraud and sentenced to 110 years in prison. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and other regulators pursued civil actions, and victims have pursued restitution through legal channels.
