California Leads in Professional Sports Teams
California has the most professional sports teams of any U.S. state, hosting franchises across all major North American leagues. The state is home to multiple teams in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS, and NWSL, reflecting its large population and major media markets.
Major Leagues Represented in the State
California fields teams such as the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, LA Galaxy, and Angel City FC. This breadth of representation makes it the clear leader in total professional franchise count.
Comparison with Other States
New York and Florida also have many teams, but neither matches California’s total across the major leagues. Texas and Illinois have strong representation as well, yet they trail the Golden State in overall franchise numbers. For a detailed breakdown of current franchises, see the official league directories at https://www.nfl.com/teams.
