Who Was Stockton Rush

Stockton Rush was the CEO and co-founder of OceanGate Expeditions, a company that offered deep-sea tourism and research dives. He was a pilot and engineer known for advocating private-sector access to the ocean. Rush held commercial diving certifications and focused on submersible design for research and tourism missions.

Circumstances of Stockton Rush Death

Stockton Rush died on June 18, 2023, during a dive to the wreck of the Titanic aboard the OceanGate Titan submersible. The vessel lost contact roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes into the descent. Authorities later confirmed that the Titan imploded, killing all five people on board, including Rush.

Aftermath and Regulatory Response

Following the incident, OceanGate suspended all operations and its certification was revoked by the American Bureau of Shipping. U.S. and international agencies reviewed deep-sea tourism regulations, with reports noting concerns over prior safety warnings and inspection practices. The U.S. Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board led the investigation into the cause of the implosion.
